St Mary's College Secondary Students Attend Annual Deaf Sports Day

On a sunny Monday morning in Melbourne, our secondary students from each campus boarded buses to attend the Deaf Sports Day at the State Netball & Hockey Centre. Organised by Deaf Sports Recreation Victoria (DSRV), the annual event brought together over 100 deaf and hard of hearing students from across Melbourne and surrounding areas for a day filled with exciting sports and social activities.

Our students took part in a variety of sports, including soccer, AFL, basketball, netball, and even fencing—building on existing skills and learning new ones along the way.

It was wonderful to see our students connecting with others through teamwork and enthusiasm. This experience has had a profoundly positive impact on their wellbeing, fostering a sense of belonging, building confidence, and strengthening friendships within the wider deaf/HOH community—something we value and encourage highly.

Coaches ran mini-clinics, giving everyone the chance to learn, improve, and have fun. Beyond the sports, there were also “passive games” like Uno, chess, and Guess Who?—perfect opportunities for students to relax, connect, and make new friends in an inclusive environment.

The event was a great success, celebrating the power of community, inclusivity, and positive spirit. We are so proud of our students for their energy, participation, and the joy they brought to the day!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this day such a positive experience for our students.
