Principal's Message

Welcome to the Term 4 college newsletter...

As we approach the conclusion of another rewarding school year, I am filled with immense pride in the achievements, growth, and resilience shown by our St Mary’s College students across all campuses. The past term has been rich with celebration, challenge, and community spirit—true indicators of our shared commitment to inclusive education.

Year 12 Graduation & End-of-Year Awards

This term we honoured our Year 12 graduates and celebrated student excellence through a series of award ceremonies held across our secondary campuses. It was particularly meaningful to see our partner schools acknowledge the accomplishments of St Mary’s College students. Their recognition reflects the strong, respectful partnerships we have built and highlights how deeply valued our students are within both school communities.

As our graduates now move into the next stage of their journeys—whether transitioning to further study, training, or the workplace—we wish them confidence, courage, and the understanding that they will always remain part of the St Mary’s College family.

Transition Programs

We also welcomed our incoming Year 7 cohort through a range of transition activities designed to build confidence, familiarity, and connection. Seeing students embrace new friendships and explore their future learning environments is a wonderful reminder of the vibrant years that lie ahead for them.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

Our Year 9 students have also shone brightly through their Café Program and senior students, their work experience placements. These hands-on learning opportunities enable students to develop practical skills, teamwork, customer service, and a genuine sense of independence. Their dedication and maturity have been commendable, and we thank our staff and community partners for making these programs such a success.

Across the school, many students have also participated in camps and retreats that fostered personal growth, collaboration, and connection with peers. These experiences often create lifelong memories and provide invaluable opportunities to develop confidence and leadership outside the classroom.

Primary Deaf Sports Day

Students from our primary campuses also took part in the annual Deaf Sports Day—a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and share experiences with peers who also navigate hearing loss. Events like this support positive identity development and help students build broad networks based in empathy, connection, and mutual respect. Our participants represented St Mary’s College with pride, earning many ribbons and demonstrating outstanding enthusiasm.

Water Safety & Swimming Programs

Water safety remains an essential life skill, especially in a country like Australia, where opportunities to enjoy aquatic environments are abundant. This term, students from Foundation to Year 9 engaged in swimming programs, carnivals, and competitions across our campuses. These experiences not only support physical skill development but also build confidence, resilience, and lifelong safety awareness. We commend all students on their enthusiastic participation.

New School Leadership Structure

In response to our school review and improvement plan, a new structure will commence from term 1, 2026. We place our students firmly at the centre of all our decision making and our roles should be set to reflect that. We envision this new model will strengthen learning and wellbeing and provide ample opportunity to champion our students and build stronger connections with our parents and carers.

Celebrating Our Community and Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the year, I extend my sincere thanks to our families, staff, and community partners for their ongoing support. Together, we have provided our students with rich learning opportunities, strong connections, and the confidence to thrive.

I wish all families a safe, joyful, and restful holiday break.
We look forward to welcoming you back for another exciting year at St Mary’s College.

Preparing for Secondary College

Our Grade 6 students are preparing for secondary school through a focused unit of work designed to build confidence and readiness for this important transition. As part of the unit, students explore the key differences between primary and secondary school, identify important locations on a school map, and learn about the key people they will encounter in their new setting.

Pictured are students actively researching the different buildings, discovering their purposes, and locating them on a map. This engaging and practical learning experience is one of the unique, specialised opportunities offered at St. Mary’s to ensure our students feel prepared, informed, and excited for the next step in their educational journey.

Growing Together as Self-Advocates

As a campus group, we all got together and further strengthened our knowledge about our PBL program. Today we looked at how to self advocate for ourselves and what that looks like both in the classroom and outside on the yard.

We worked collaboratively in groups and read through a scenario. We then had to work together and share our ideas about what we would do to advocate for ourselves in that scenario. It was fantastic to see all the wonderful ideas that everyone shared about how best to advocate for our learning in different school environments.

Grade 3/4 Excursion to CERES Farm

The Grade 3/4 students braved the dismal weather and visited CERES Farm in Brunswick East. Despite the rain, spirits remained high as students explored the farm and learned all about what it means to be soil guardians.

Students discovered how healthy soil supports plants, animals, and people, and even got their hands dirty learning about composting and the importance of caring for our environment. The day was filled with curiosity, teamwork, and plenty of muddy smiles — a wonderful reminder that meaningful learning can happen rain, hail, or shine!

Grade 5/6 Landfill Project

As part of students' participation in their inquiry unit, students worked in small groups to build a landfill designed to leak leachate so it would not enter the surrounding environment. The unit covered background information on how landfills are constructed and the various elements required to make these structures environmentally sound.

Students took on numerous roles, from design engineer to project accountant. Together, they had to budget for the project, pay for materials and equipment. Several design changes were necessary before testing. It was fantastic to see students using their higher-order thinking skills to justify choices and clarify decision-making.

Holy Trinity 40th Celebration

Holy Trinity recently celebrated the big 4-0! To mark this incredible milestone, the whole school enjoyed a day full of fun, laughter, and cake.

Since our school was established in 1985, students and staff joined in the festivities by dressing up in 1980s attire or incorporating the number 40 into their outfits. From neon colours and big hair to retro tunes and party games, it was a day to remember. Happy 40th, Holy Trinity!

St Mary’s End of Year Activities

All St Mary’s students came together to celebrate the end of the school year with a morning full of fun and creative Christmas activities. The Grade 6 leaders did a fantastic job guiding their groups, offering support and encouragement to the younger students as everyone showcased their artistic talents.

The students engaged in decorating gingerbread biscuits, baubles, created clay ornaments and took part in some print making. It was a morning filled with joy, laughter, and the sound of Christmas carols as students and staff joined in the festive spirit.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of 2025 together as a school community!

Remembering the Fallen

With great pride, the grade 6 students of Holy Trinity and St Mary’s were invited to participate in a student-led Remembrance Day ceremony at Westfield Knox.

Joined by the members of the public and representatives of the Boronia RSL, students gathered to remember the fallen soldiers by participating in a ceremony, followed by a minute's silence. Lest We Forget.

Surf Life Saving Victoria - Beach Awareness Program

The students in 5/6 had the privilege of visiting Hampton Beach to participate in Surf Life Saving Victoria Beach Awareness Program.

Consisting of both water and beach activities, students learnt practical ways to keep themselves and their peers safe around water. They learnt the basics of CPR, how to look for rips in the water and beach signage. They also practiced putting on a life jacket and learnt how to save each other with everyday household objects.

Unfortunately due to water quality and the chilly weather, students were not able to enter the water. Regardless, they had a fantastic day on the sand with their mates.

Teaching & Learning

Showcasing the value-add of our school...

Focus on Reading

This year, our teachers collaborated to develop and implement strategies to enhance reading for students who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH).

Recognising that strong literacy skills are vital for success in work and life, our College aims to ensure all students meet or exceed expected reading levels or progress steadily to close gaps. Three groups of teachers focused on different areas, achieving excellent reading outcomes for our students.

Visual Phonics

This group examined the effect of explicit phonological awareness instruction for DHH students using visual methods like Cued Articulation. Combined with multisensory techniques such as observing mouth shape and tongue placement, cued articulation enabled students to better identify vowel sounds.

By focusing on listening rather than just visual word forms, students improved their ability to manipulate syllables and sounds. Overall, the use of cued articulation offered a visual scaffold, leading to significant progress in their reading development.

Cued Articulation (play video)

Decoding

This group explored explicit teaching of morphology to help students decode unfamiliar words by breaking them into familiar parts. This skill benefits both primary and secondary students, especially DHH learners who encounter new words less frequently.

The MorThemes intervention supported structured decoding and themed vocabulary activities through explicit instruction, repeated practice, visual scaffolds, and review. Over one term, participants showed a 20% increase in accuracy and greater independence in identifying and applying morpheme knowledge.

Close Reading

This group explored a strategy for senior students to improve reading through direct instruction of text annotation, promoting active engagement and deeper comprehension. Think-alouds effectively modelled how to convey thoughts, questions, and interpretations onto notes.

Symbols, tabs, and colours were introduced to help students quickly identify and annotate key parts of the text. Student samples demonstrated clear application of the taught strategies, with feedback indicating increased confidence in tackling complex texts.

Primary Schools Deaf Sports Day

A high-spirited day of sport and friendship...

Primary deaf sports day is a highly anticipated annual sporting event for deaf and hard-of-hearing primary students from schools across Victoria, Australia. It is an opportunity to bring DHH children to compete in track and field events like running, long jump and vortex, while also socializing and making new friends.

Deaf Sports Victoria took the lead in organizing this event, supported by Auslan interpreters and many Deaf volunteers.

Our younger students engaged in a variety of fun activities such as running under a parachute, sack race and frisbee. St Mary’s College for the deaf came sixth and proudly represented our school on this high spirited occasion. Many friendships rekindled and new connections formed across the day.

New Social Media Age Restrictions

Information about the new social media age restrictions...

How to support your child under 16 with the new social media age restrictions

From 10 December 2025, the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 will require social media platforms to:

  • prevent children and young people under 16 from having a social media account
  • deactivate or freeze existing accounts held by people under 16

Delaying access to social media protects the health and wellbeing of young people and gives them extra time to build real world connections and digital literacy skills.

The responsibility will be on the social media platforms, not parents, carers, children or schools, to implement these new restrictions.

Most popular social media platforms will be age restricted. These include Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Reddit and YouTube.

Messaging services and online games, as well as apps and platforms that support health and education, can still be used.

How to help under 16s prepare for the change

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting their children to be safe online.

To help get under 16s ready for the social media minimum age requirements, you can go to the eSafety website to learn more about the social media age restrictions and find tips on how to talk about social media age restrictions with young people.

What the change means for our school

At our campuses, most age-restricted social media platforms are blocked for student use via the partner schools' network. Some campuses may allow student access to YouTube in a logged-out state or if they are year 12 students. This will be determined by our partner schools and communicated by them.

To keep up to date about the new social media age restrictions, visit the eSafety website and subscribe to their newsletter.

Australia Proudly Represented at the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics

Australia delivered a strong and inspiring presence at the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics, held from 15–26 November. This year marked a significant milestone, with Australia sending one of its largest teams ever — 98 Deaf athletes across a wide range of sports including athletics, swimming, basketball, football, tennis and more.

The team’s involvement reflected years of dedication, training and commitment from athletes, coaches and support staff. Beyond results and medal counts, the Tokyo Deaflympics highlighted the strength, resilience and determination of our Deaf sporting community. Australian athletes competed with pride, showcasing exceptional sportsmanship and representing the country with distinction on the world stage.

A key feature of this year’s Deaflympics was the strong focus on accessibility and representation. Daily updates and coverage in Auslan ensured that Deaf Australians could follow the journey of their athletes in their own language, creating a powerful sense of national connection and community support.

For many athletes, stepping onto the international stage was a dream realised — proving that with passion, teamwork and perseverance, barriers can be overcome.

We congratulate all members of the Australian Deaflympic Team for their outstanding efforts and for inspiring Deaf and hard-of-hearing students across the country, including our own community here at St Mary’s College for the Deaf.
